“Who we are in the present includes who we were in the past.”
I set the goal of becoming a counselor at the age of 16. Every educational and employment choice I have made since has been a careful step toward that goal. Counseling has truly been a calling for me. I have now been practicing as a therapist for over 20 years and I consider it an honor to do this work. I have a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education from the University of Colorado at Denver, with a concentration in couple and family counseling. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Maryland and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado. Outside of my role as a counselor, I enjoy yoga, music, cooking, traveling, and goofing around with my husband and our two sons.
My therapeutic approach stems from my belief that each of us inherently has the tools we need to solve our own problems. However, life is incredibly complicated and emotions are very powerful, so it is easy to lose sight of this ability. In counseling sessions, I work hard to create a space where my clients feel safe, respected, supported, and fundamentally understood. Once this foundation is in place, I serve as a guide as you seek insight into the origin of your challenges, and begin to feel empowered to change unhealthy patterns in your life. My style is integrative, which means I approach each individual and their needs uniquely. Some of the interventions I utilize come from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, developmental, and mindfulness theories. I believe counseling can be a powerful tool for gaining a better understanding of ourselves, clarifying our goals, and building an empowered and fulfilling life.
